We at ICSP believe that a safe, respectful, positive learning environment promotes healthy, happy productive students. We have therefore developed this Code of Conduct to define our expectations of behaviour for students, staff and parents/guardians.
The Code provides a guidance and reference for parents/guardians, staff and students in determining acceptable behaviour. The Code applies to each of the aforementioned groups of people in the following contexts: in the school, on the school grounds and for any school sponsored or group related events. The primary goal of our school is to foster appropriate behaviour so that learning time can be maximized. Our goal is to help our students to become responsible and positive contributors to society. To that end, we are committed to our policy manual and our Restitution-like Model for fostering and encouraging appropriate behaviour.
Parents are expected to: - Make sure that their children attend classes regularly, arrive on time and do their homework (should the student be absent or late the parent is expected to contact the school) - Address any concerns to their child’s teacher first. If further follow-up is required you may then contact the school’s administrator. Following that, parents should contact the superintendent. If the concern is not rectified at that level, address the Board, in writing, through the superintendent. - Attend school events, support the school and stay in contact with school staff. - Help their children develop positive attitudes about school and learning. - Encourage the peaceful resolution of conflict. - Encourage their child to reflect if he/she has engaged in unacceptable behaviour at school. - Respect our school’s attendance policy and closed campus policy for Secondary I and II students. - Show respect to all: defiance, abuse, bullying, violence and threats will not be tolerated under any circumstances. - Discuss and ensure that their child(ren) understand the Code of Conduct. - Pay school fees promptly or make arrangements with the administration should that not be possible.
Students are expected to:
- Attend school regularly and punctually. - Be prepared for classes and have all required materials. - Complete all assignments including homework. - Complete assignments missed due to absences or make an alternate plan with their teacher. - Dress properly. - Develop self-discipline and show courtesy to all people in the school and while representing the school. - Show respect for ones self, staff, peers, visitors, guests and property. - Respect school rules. - Respect our attendance policy and closed campus policy for Secondary I and II. - Maintain their desks and lockers in a clean and orderly manner. - Pick up after themselves in the hallways, classrooms, schoolyard and lunchrooms. - Demonstrate behavior that contributes to a safe, respectful, positive learning environment. - Seek ways to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. - Accept responsibility for their actions. - Tell the truth. - Show respect and courtesy to all: defiance, abuse, bullying, violence and threats will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Staff is expected to:
- Attend regularly and punctually. - Attend all staff meetings. - Dress appropriately. - Communicate with parents regularly. - Demonstrate behaviour that contributes to a safe, respectful, positive learning environment. - Implement fair discipline, consistent with all students and in all situations. - Inform themselves and respect the MTS Code of Professional Conduct. - Follow appropriate communication protocol. - Maintain a neat and orderly classroom. - Respect students, staff and parent/guardians and treat them fairly and consistently. - Create a safe, stimulating and respectful learning environment. - Create and implement an inclusive program. - Assess and evaluate student’s achievement, and explain process used. - Keep accurate records. - Represent the school on committees. - Assist student on resolving conflicts peacefully. - Respect confidential information about students, staff and parents/guardians. - Show respect and courtesy to all: defiance, abuse, bullying, violence and threats will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
CONSEQUENCES:
For Parents/Guardians:
The conduct of parents/guardians in schools is governed by Board Policies and provincial and federal legislation. Consequences for inappropriate behaviour may include verbal or written warning, restricted access to the school or other consequences as defined by law.
For students:
The appropriate and respectful conduct of students is a learning process. At ICSP we acknowledge and respect that fact. As a result, we stress discipline versus punishment in that consequences for actions are used as instruction for better moral behaviour. Consequences therefore vary and can range from an apology to restitution for damages to suspensions. We track data in order to identify those students who are repeat offenders. For these repeat offenders, our school team will meet with student and parents and decide on a course of action. The student’s privileges may be suspended (examples recess, outings, intramural sports, etc) for a period of time. Chronic offenders, especially disruptive or chronic truancy may have suspensions, withdrawal from courses or semester depending on the severity of transgressions, but this only after all avenues of recuperation have been exhausted. We want our students to be the best possible people they can be. We look at inappropriate behaviour as a mistake and the importance of the process rests on learning from those mistakes.
For staff:
The conduct of Red River Valley School Division staff is governed by Board Policies as well as provincial and federal legislation. Furthermore, staff members are also governed by their own professional organization’s Code of Conduct. Consequences for inappropriate behaviour may range from a verbal warning to the termination of employment.
